200 Chickens Rescued After Truck Accident in Ohio Thanks to Local Shelter Heroes

May 20, 2026

200 chickens were rescued from an Ohio highway after a truck accident and safely relocated to shelters and caregivers.

Late night in Hubbard, Ohio, a chaotic highway scene turned into an unexpected rescue mission when around 200 chickens were left stranded after 22 crates fell off a moving truck.

The birds, believed to be en route to slaughter, suddenly found themselves scattered across an interstate with feathers, broken crates, and panic everywhere.

Fortunately, help arrived quickly when county dispatch contacted a nearby animal shelter. Staff from The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project stepped in despite the situation being far outside their usual work with dogs and cats.

It took the team roughly two hours to carefully collect all the chickens and bring them to safety.

As shelter president Jason Cooke described, the scene was intense: chickens, crates, and feathers were spread across the roadway, even spilling into active traffic lanes. Still, the team stayed on site late into the night to ensure every bird was rescued.

Cooke noted that although they are not equipped to handle farm animals, there was no alternative at that hour. The priority was simply to save as many lives as possible.

Since the rescue, the chickens have been placed with local rescues, community caregivers, and veterinary support. Around 50 of them were transferred to Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary in Ravenna, where they now have a safer environment.

The truck driver has not attempted to reclaim the animals.

Beyond the immediate rescue, the story highlights how intelligent and social chickens truly are.

They can recognize individuals, form complex social bonds, and even demonstrate forms of empathy within their groups.

Unfortunately, most chickens in industrial farming systems face extremely short lives with limited protection under animal welfare laws, especially compared to other livestock.

For many, stories like this become a reminder that small daily choices, including more plant-based meals, can meaningfully reduce demand and help prevent suffering at scale.
