One of the more consistent findings in the psychology of food is that adults, once they’ve settled into a way of eating, are almost impossibly hard to shift.
The meat‑and‑potatoes eater keeps eating meat and potatoes. The takeout eater keeps ordering takeout.
Dietary change among adults is genuinely one of the slowest human behaviors to move.
A new University of Exeter study published in Psychology of Human‑Animal Intergroup Relations argues that this is where the plant‑based movement has been losing the plot.
The two most receptive windows for meat‑free eating are childhood and adolescence, not adulthood.
And most of them close because parents, cafeterias, and family routines quietly hold them shut.
It is a finding that reframes a lot of assumptions about who the vegan movement should actually be talking to.
What The Exeter Study Found
The research was led by Dr. Luke McGuire and used a mixed‑methods design, combining survey data with structured interviews across a large sample of British children, teenagers, and adults.
The team looked at attitudes toward meat, moral reasoning about animals, and reported dietary behavior.
The headline finding, in their own summary: children and teenagers are far more open to giving up meat than adults are, and often try to do so, but most cannot sustain the change.
The reasons split neatly by age. Younger children reported that the main motivation was disgust when they realized meat comes from animals.

Parents told their children they’d grow out of it. Schools served meat by default.

Why This Is A Big Deal For The Movement

Family doctors who don’t reflexively warn against vegetarian diets for growing children when the evidence has moved on.
And, honestly, restaurants that make it possible to bring a group of teenagers out for dinner without one of them having to eat only fries.

That planning caveat matters. It is also entirely doable.
What The Nutrition Research Actually Supports
The old parental concern about vegetarian diets for children was a nutrition one.

Well‑planned vegetarian and vegan diets are healthful and nutritionally adequate at all stages of the life cycle, including childhood and adolescence.
That includes growing bodies, athletic teenagers, and pregnant mothers.
The German VeChi Youth Study, published in Nutrients, assessed intake and status for vegetarian, vegan, and omnivore children ages six to eighteen.
The vegan children in the study generally met or exceeded intake targets for most nutrients, with the well‑known exceptions of B12, iodine, and, in some cases, vitamin D and calcium.
Those exceptions apply to plant‑based adults too.
They are manageable with either fortified foods or supplements.
The two nutrients that most consistently need attention in plant‑based children’s diets are B12 and iodine.
Iron and zinc are usually fine if the diet includes legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds daily.
Calcium works out with fortified plant milks.
Omega‑3 fatty acids come from ground flaxseeds, chia, walnuts, or an algae‑based supplement. None of that is exotic. It is baseline plant‑based nutrition, applied consistently.
The Exeter study points, indirectly, to what a supportive environment looks like.
Pulling from the paper and the surrounding literature, four factors seem to matter most.
Household alignment.
Not every family member needs to go vegetarian, but the household kitchen needs to be able to feed the plant‑based child the same core meal as everyone else, with animal products added on the side rather than plants added as a separate task.
This one change, more than any other, removes the daily friction.
School support.
A child whose school offers a genuine plant‑based lunch, not a lettuce leaf next to the chicken nuggets, has a real fighting chance. Where that is not available, packed lunches become the workaround.
Social preparation.
Teenagers who know how to explain their diet, and have a friend group that respects it, sustain the change much longer than those who don’t.
Simple phrases like I’ve stopped eating meat, but I’ll happily eat around it go a long way in real social settings.
Genuine plant‑based food.
Not more meat analogs necessarily, but food the child actually enjoys. A bowl of dal and rice. A properly seasoned lentil soup.
A homemade veggie burger.
A pizza with vegetables and vegan cheese. The best predictor of long‑term adherence, for any age, is whether the food is worth eating.
